12. December 2004
The Cyclocross National Championships were held over the weekend in Portland, and J Juelis was there. He boldly entered the super-competitive Masters 35-39 race, with high hopes after news of the new course. Unfortunately, he suffered a flat tire in the first 100m, on the transition from asphalt to gravel, effectively deflating his hopes of a top showing. He slogged on through to the pits, but once they managed to scrape all the mud off and try his spare wheel, the brakes didn't line up with the rim. So he sat back and watched the rest of the race, most likely with a cold beer in his hand. Congrats to J on a fine season, and tough break with the mechanicals. At least he finished the cross season the way he started it... Next year we'll send a pit crew with him to Nationals.

In the Emerald City Cyclocross Series final race, J Juelis and Leo Katolik battled bitter cold conditions and a strong field at North SeaTac on Sunday. The course was wet, but not muddy enough to give J much of an advantage, as he struggled with shifting problems, but powered his way to 8th on the day and 6th overall in the Masters C series. Leo unfortunately succumbed to the conditions, but vows to redeem himself on the road in the spring.
J is now off to Nationals next weekend in Portland. Good luck, and hopefully there will be more mud...
