20. December 2006
10.December
Congratulations to all the members of GANG GREEN! Another season of psycho-cross has come to an end. The races this season dished out their fair share of pain (just ask the bikes), but in the end, a great time was had by all.
The highlights of this season include two top three finishes for the points race. Both Jud Miller (cat 4) and Wilbur Kelly (cat 3 master's 35+) earned bronze, and Beth Oldroyd came in 7th in the Women's 3 cateory. David James earned enough points to secure 8th place for the season in the cat 4 35+ field, and Derik Andreoli just missed breaking the top ten in the cat 4 series (11th overall). What he didn't miss breaking was his seat, though!
Kelly Creek, SCC #9
The final race of the season greeted racers with chilly temperatures and plenty of mud. The course was significantly different than previous Kelly Creek courses, and the route setting seemed to suit Beth Oldroyd just fine. She finished in 4th place in the Women's cat 3 race, which had the most difficult conditions. After a *very* strong start, Jud Miller managed a 5th place finish in the cat 4 race. Wilbur Kelly matched this result in the master 3 35+ race.
Charlie Bartlett smiled his way to a 13th place finish which earned him enough points to move up to 17th for the series (cat 3 35+).
David James broke the course in for the rest of the racers, and set up the tent for *prime* spectator action! He finished 13th on the day (cat 4 35+).
Karen James - formerly known as the Dr. of Descent - earned a new nickname today after disloating her shoulder then popping it back into place herself (she is a doctor, you know) and finishing the race in 17th spot to earn 17th for the series. Feel free to call her 'Lethal Weapon'. C'mon, you know what I'm talking about. Don't be embarassed. That movie came out when Mel Gibson was more associated with the movie 'Road Warrior' than a real life road warrior!
Other bunny finishers included Derik Andreoli, 22nd (cat 4); J Juelis, 25th (cat 3 master 35+); and Peter Stocker, 27th (also cat 3 master 35+).
3.December and 4.December
Fort Flagler Weekend, SCC # 7 & 8
Race #2
Sunday's race was fast and furious, and unique to say the least. Weaving though and climbing over the bunkers in the upper part of the park proved to be quite challenging. In the first race of the day, David James kissed a concrete wall after hitting a turn a bit too hot. Careful shaing around that scab, David! Despite the damage to his face, DJ rolled across the finish in 12th spot.
Jud Miller had the best day of all the bunnies finishing 4th in the cat 4 race. His good day continued with free beer, cheap and tasty burritos, and a super deal on a JoeBarRacing green Kona cross bike. It will be hard to miss him next season. Just look for the neon green bike off the front of the pack!
Wilbur Kelly also had a good day finishing 6th overall, despite suffering through back spasms. He now sits in 2nd spot going into the last race of the series.
Beth Oldroyd cranked to yet another top ten finish as well. Spinning to 8th place in the race, she now sits in 7th place for the series.
Other JoeBarBarians also gave strong performances. Karen James finished in 15th position, Charlie Bartlett in 17th, Derik Andreoli - who, incidently *finally* bunny-hopped a barrier without marring his chainring - finshed 21st. Joules Killawatts rolled across the line in 22nd position, and Peter Stocker in 24th.
Race #1
Few courses are more fun than Saturday's course at Ft. Flagler. The course has a bit of everything: fast single track descent, sand traps, single and double barriers... What more could you ask for? Well, Derik Andreoli could ask for one fewer hay bails! He found that his flat-bars were great for the fast singletrack descents except for one key feature - they're about an inch and a half too wide. Unfortunately he found out the hard way by clipping a hay bail at top speed. He bounced on his head and tumbled 20-some-odd feet. "You KNOW you've taken a serious tumble when someone is asking whether you're alright before you even come to a stop!" Luckily the ground was soft, and his head is hard! And too bad for him that he got pipped while attempting to wheelie across the line! His 16th place finish quickly turned into a 17th placing.
More noteable than D's shenanigan's, were Wilbur, Jud, and Beth's results. Wilbur fought hard for a 3d place finish. Apparently the mtb-like conditions suit his style. Jud finished 4th moving him into 1st place for the series, and Beth Oldroyd nailed 6th position moving her into 5th spot overall. The ony other gang green member to break the top ten was David James (10th).
Of the other entrants, Charlie Bartlett finished in the lucky number 13 spot that Karen James oh so narrowly missed (14th). J cranked to 16th place, and Peter to 22nd.
12.November
Hail Yes!
That's right, hail, as in little ice beads of pain, is really cool to watch from a car, but a whole different story when you're racing your bike! Just ask Beth, or check out her bruises.
Despite the conditions, Beth managed to squeak into the top 10 today. This result pushed her up into 6th position for the series.
Most notably, Wilbur Kelly rolled up in 6th spot. he now sits 5th overall. Jud blasted through the mud on his new tire (yes, he only replaced the rear after slip-sliding-away at the Snoho race) to an 8th place finish. If you're wondering what it's like to sit in 2nd overall, just ask him.
Derik Andreoli was the best of the rest. He narrowly made the top 20 (18th to be precise). Even more narrowly making the top 20 were David and Karen James (20th and 20th). J hit 22nd, and Peter hit 25th.
