Emerald City Cyclocross Series #6, State Cyclocross Championships

21 November 2004

Two bunnies competed in the 6th race of the Emerald City Cyclocross Series, which was also the Washington State Cyclocross Chapionships. J Juelis and Leo Katolik competed in the Masters C category, which got underway a few minutes late, around 9:45am. It was still cold and fairly wet, but the course, while slippery in places, appeared manageable to those of us safely on the sidelines. J got off to a fast start, and by the end of the first half-lap was solidly in the top ten. Leo, in his first ever race, stuck it out firmly in the middle of the group, which was rapidly spreading out over the course, which was nearly flat.

As the attrition of the mud pit began to take its toll, J crept slowly up in the lead chase group, which was intent on bringing back the lone leader, who was 15 seconds or so off the front.

After the last time through the mud, J powered up on the back straight and made his move. The last time into the woods, he was gaining quickly on the leaders, who had now nearly caught the solo breakaway. Out of the woods onto the finish straight, J was motoring. He blew by into second place with what appeared to little effort, and, had we been close enough to give him some encouragement, might've even caught the leader. As it was, J finished with his first ever podium finish, and a silver medal in the state championships, too!

Leo was still in the midst of the group, and even working his way up. He finished solidly in 34th, an excellent result in his first race. Congratulations to both of the bunnies for a great race and some excellent spectating.

Results:
J Juelis 2nd, Masters C
Leo Katolik 34th, Masters C
