Mason Lake 2: Front to back, and back to front

David Martos overslept his alarm, missed his ride, and won the Master C/D road race at the second installment of the Mason Lake race this Saturday. Dmart won Joe Bar Racing’s first road victory of the year, unleashing his inner buffalo stampede to sprint ahead of a fast closing field. The elder Bunny Boys were well represented in the final top 20 and continued once again to be a presence in the field throughout the race. Ben Ulness (7th), J. Juelis (9th), and Barry Campbell (18th) moved forward in lap 3 to follow Dmart into top 20 finishes.

The Bunny Boys were well represented in the Master C/D race with 7 riders taking the start. A windy course greeted the riders and while the pace was a bit higher than Mason Lake 1 few riders tried to break off the front into the gusting crosswind. Wilbur Kelly and Leo Katolik joined Dmart up at the front of the pack forcing the pace and keeping tabs on an anxious group. Further back Ben, Barry, J, and Derik Andreoli laid low staying out of the wind and out of trouble as the field played slinky in the initial laps.

The pace picked up as lap 3 began spreading the field and raising anxieties, heart rates, and the tension in the pack. As many riders jockeyed for position out of the wind, others gradually moved forward as the field approached the narrow curves of the final kilometers. Wilbur Kelly upped the pace even more causing quite a stir in the field. As the field approached the final kilometer 6 of the 7 Bunny Boys were holding positions in the 20 riders (Derik, having flatted on lap 2, chased the pack with an impromptu TT workout). Tensions increased even more as the 200 meters sign came into view. Leo was forced out of the race when, in an effort to avoid hitting the braking (?) rider in front of him, he endo-ed into the pavement. The impromptu tactic caused a major split in the group as the sprint was beginning.

Once the road opened into a full sprint Bunnies were everywhere. Dmart launched off the front unleashing his power and scream to get off the front and stay ahead across the line.
