West Side Mountain Bike Series #4
20 March 2005
Report by: Barry Campbell
The first day of spring was finally here, so it rained. Not so much during the race, but the course at
South SeaTac was muddy from the night before. I got there in time to run through a warmup lap, then we
all lined up. We were 5 bunnies strong today, and on a mission.
Derik, Ben and Shawn led out the sprint, while I stayed back a little. I'd raced the day before in
miserable conditions, working harder than I'd planned, and didn't need a strong showing today to hold onto
my lead in the series. I got to the singletrack in 13th, but the bunny train ahead was full steam ahead.
D led the race most of the way, with Shawn on his wheel and Ben a couple of places back, but gave up the
lead to an unattached rider who ended up winning.
I spent the first lap or so comfortably following a couple of guys, going slower than I could have, but not
concerned. The second lap I started getting impatient, and had moved up to 10th, but on the third lap I
figured I wasn't really saving myself for anything, I might as well burn it all. I hammered by three more
on the back straight, then headed up the singletrack climbs in 7th. I nearly chased down one more on the
way in to the finish, but ran out of steam a little too soon.
Ben held onto his lead in the 19-34 Beginner Men, I won the 35-44 Beginner Men, and Becky the 19-34
Beginner Women. D and Shawn finished 3-4 in the 19-34 Beginner Men.
