Mt. Hood Cycling Classic
4 June 2006
Report by: Wilbur Kelly
I'm ready for cross season. Once again the weather was epic down there.
I forgot about the fun part of races with hills, the descents. D, I would of made you proud.
Though the rest of the racing lived up to its reputation as a very tough race. I almost puked
crossing the finish line on the first race. Those guys kept building speed around every corner
up the hill. It was all I could do to hang on. After the first race fifteen seconds was the
diffence between 3rd and 20th. There was little wind the next day for the TT and an added
bonus of 30 seconds, I think the clocks where off. Adam and I both had slower times on our
watches then what was posted. That course was so fun.
On the start line for the last race there was a sun break so I ditched my rain jacket at the
last minute and hoped for the best. The rain came and went along with the peloton, there
were numerous flats, as you came around a corner riders digging themselves out of bushes
and ditches and a crash that I was involved in. It was at the bottom of the last hill and
the guy in front of me just fell over. My choice was to run over him or his bike. He looked
softer so I aimed for him. I went over the bars but jumped right back up and caught back
onto the group. I finished with four others.
After the race they had a free BBQ with veggie burgers and lots of swag. It all seemed
worth it somehow after the free food. Adam says hello to all and offered his place to crash,
for the track races down in P-town.
